The Weekly Croissant: Some Rambling Thoughts
Getting Lyrics Wrong / Freezing Polaroid Film / A Poem I Loved
Hello from backstage at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis, MN, where I am wearing what is essentially a zip-able sleeping bag and waiting for the kettle to boil so I can warm my hands on a cup of hot water. I’ve been in the upper midwest since last weekend and cold has been my constant state of being.
George gave me a vintage Polaroid camera for my birthday, and I managed to freeze my first pack of film by leaving it in the van overnight (rookie mistake!). Don’t worry, it’s art.
When I planned this trip, I had visions of going ice skating at Millennium Park on my birthday, one of my most nostalgic Chicago memories. But it was so cold on the 16th (-12 F with a windchill around -26) that even the skating rink shut down…TOO COLD FOR ICE SKATING!
Luckily I have a new Nordic murder mystery show to watch (The Bridge), and my childhood friends who still live in Chicago were hearty enough to brave the weather for a celebratory dinner at Table, Donkey, and Stick, which specializes in “European Alpine Cuisine ” aka cheese and wine, so it was still a lovely day.
I’ve been listening to the new Waxahatchee single, “Right Back To It”, on repeat… and I fell in love with the lyric “You just settle in/ Like a song/ We Know It”, only to find out from the damn New York Times that I had it wrong, and the lyric is actually “You just settle in/ Like a Song/ With no end”.
I’m heartbroken. Just when you think you understand a song fully and relate to it on such an immense level, you find out that YOU NEVER REALLY KNEW IT AT ALL!
A song with no end is VERY different than a song that WE KNOW.
This lyrical trickery happened to me a couple of years ago with one of my favorite Viv & Riley songs, “Time is Everything”. I always thought the chorus was “You’ve been down in Asheville foolin’ round/ I still don’t/ I’ve been tossing turning/ Restless all night long”. The real lyrics are “You’ve been down in Asheville foolin’ round/Dusk till Dawn”…. I’m still upset about this. I petitioned them to change it but for some reason, they didn’t want to rewrite the title track from their 2018 album based on my arbitrary demands.
And before I take off, a poem that I loved this week
