The Weekly Croissant: Art Hoe Thanksgiving Roundup
The Toughest Indian in the World / The Fifth Element / Alone Will tell
Hello Croissants,
I hope everyone had a beautiful Thanksgiving. Despite the dubious legend and intentions behind the holiday, I do appreciate a modern interpretation of it; cooking a big meal with family and friends, and being grateful for all that we have.
Now, I don’t cook, so maybe my reliance on the labor of others makes me enjoy this holiday more. I do my share of dishes and cleaning, but my favorite part of hosting Thanksgiving is putting out a giant charcuterie board, and refilling it constantly such that it feels to be enchanted and bottomless.
I think I posted one of my past creations on this same cutting board in a previous croissant, I need to go back and check how this years’ compares!
Here is some (other) art that has accompanied my holiday week:
Sheman Alexie’s “The Toughest Indian in The World” (A Collection of Short Stories)
I picked this up at West Side Bookstore in Ann Arbor before playing at The Ark. I had heard of Alexie, but first started reading his work here on Substack. It’s been a treat to dive into this book, highly recommend!
George and I went out to see “The Fifth Element,” a sci-fi movie from 1997 which was for some reason playing at Opry Mills. The movie began with an intro explaining it’s historical context and noting that certain wardrobe choices for the female lead including the iconic bandage dress (shown below). were “unpopular with feminists”.
I enjoyed this movie. But it was definitely made in 1997. Among my feminist complaints, the bandage dress didn’t even make the list, I actually thought it was pretty hot! I was more concerned that the only female character in the entire movie was a supernatural creation with no personality, character traits, agency, or history.
Anyway, if you ignore all of that, it’s worth a watch, especially if you’re into Bruce Willis and/or Sci-Fi. My favorite part was the rendering of an entirely Vertical New York City. Also, no cell phones, but weird “text” messages on paper that arrive via air shoot to your bedroom.
As far as new music, I’ve been loving the new solo record from Morgan Harris, called “Alone Will Tell”. You can find it on Bandcamp, Here!
We have it on vinyl and it’s been spinning in our house a lot this week. Immaculate vibes.
Alright my pastries, that’s all for this week.
I did buy some mini croissants for Thursday morning breakfast. They were just grocery store brand, but my mom and nephew stuffed them with chocolate and put them in the microwave and they ended up being a big hit, at least with the 6 year olds!
Until Next Sunday,
Rachel
