The Weekly Croissant: Art Hoe Roundup
Poetry with Plot/ Nothing Ends with a Ribbon Around It, Yes I know
Hello Croissants!
I hope everyone has been reading something delicious and buttery this week. Here’s some goods I’ve been getting into lately.
Book: “Disease of Kings”, poetry by Anders Carlson-Wee
I’ve been following Anders’ work since he was an MFA student at Vanderbilt and dating a fiddle player buddy of mine. I have been struck by a few of his poems and decided to buy his most recent book, “Disease of Kings”. I sat down with it and ended up reading the whole thing in one sitting. It’s a book of poetry that feels like a novel, with characters and a loose plot that spans the collection. If you’re someone who doesn’t usually enjoy poetry (it’s pretty hit or miss for me tbh) this might be a nice gateway for you!
Music: Maya de Vitry has a new record out called “The Only Moment,” and it’s my favorite of her solo records so far. Ever since I stumbled across The Stray Birds performing at the (now deceased) weekly bluegrass night at Cantab Lounge in Cambridge, MA one Tuesday evening in 2013, Maya has been one of my biggest songwriting inspirations. The new record is full of stunners, but a few of my favs are “Some Rent” (Pain is not some rent you pay for love) and “Ribbon” (Nothing ends with a ribbon around it, yes I know).
TV: THE BEAR SEASON 3 STILL SO GOOD
I don’t know if I need to even say anything more about this show…OH YEAH I DO; They used “No Machine” by Adrienne Lenker under a montage of Carmy remembering the good times with Claire and I almost lost my mind.
I also watched “America’s Sweethearts, Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders” and very much enjoyed it. I have been thinking a lot about the ways I have rejected traditionally feminine behaviors or roles starting from the time that I was a little kid, and how that is a form of internalized misogyny.
That is not to say that those women don’t face/play into misogynistic norms and expectations… Just that I don’t think tackling one another as you run a ball up and down a field is a more important societal role than community leading/gathering, supporting, joy-making, and dancing.
Let me know what you’ve been digging into lately!
