Another month, another Art Hoe Roundup!
Movie: All Of Us Strangers
I finally saw this movie, which involves an almost unfairly sexy romance between Paul Mescal (Normal People) and Andrew Scott (hot priest in Fleabag)… the mutual appreciation society between Sally Rooney related TV characters, Phoebe Bridgers, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge is almost too beautiful to handle, because I love all of these cultural moments so much.
Anyway All Of Us Strangers was devastating, and beautiful. I watched it with my sister and when it ended we both just sat there kind of heartbroken and silent and then she said “this is why we don’t watch art hoe movies, Rachel”.
We had to recover by watching “Falling for Figaro”, a rom-com about an aspiring opera singer who finds love and meaning while studying Mozart in the highlands of Scotland. Not going to lie, this movie slapped. And it qualifies for the croissant because the main character was definitely aspiring to leave her corporate job and become an Art Hoe.
Book: I finished “A Visit From the Goon Squad”, which was surprising in format, not really following one specific plot but rather jumping around to give numerous perspectives from intertwined characters. At one point, the previously normal prose format shifts into a powerpoint presentation, and you have to turn the book sideways to interpret. I think this was because the narrator of that chapter is a child with Autism, and this was their most comfortable storytelling format. I finished this book in a restaurant called Blackbird, in Bozeman, MT, and when I was reading that part the waitress came over and said “That looks like an interesting book!” Indeed.
I snagged “Demon Copperhead” from my sister so will be starting that soon. So many people have recommended it, and I am generally big Kingsolver fan, so I’m excited to dive in.
TV Show: Slow Horses
I have been telling everyone to watch this show, and you should too! It follows a group of disgraced MI5 agents who have been relegated to an off-building called “Slough House,” where they seemingly do nothing, but of course, end up saving the day. There’s lots of cool spy stuff, but also lot’s of hilarity and outsiders kind of humor. If “The Americans” and “Ted Lasso” had a TV-show child it would be Slow Horses.
I have a huge crush on one of the lead actors Jack Lowden, and was validated in this when I brought the show up to the promoter at Live from the Divide. The first thing he said was “That guy, River, is SO HOT!”.
Music:
On repeat for me lately have been new songs from Anna Tivel, Medium Build, Bendigo Fletcher, and obviously, Beyoncé feat. Rhiannon Giddens on banjo!
Check them out:
ALLLRIGHT hope
yall enjoy your week!!
Happy Sunday!
Rachel
I listened to Slow Horses audio book on a road trip. It is one of those series of books that the reader can present the characters in a manner that makes you laugh out loud. Jackson Lamb is priceless.
The Americans and Fleabag are two excellent show underappreciated by the public, and Ted Lasso is an instant classic. All of these shows feature characters that are both imperfect and relatable. We will watch Slow Horses based on your rec. Current song on repeat = Equine Elvis!
