The Weekly Croissant: Art Hoe Roundup
Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far On Foot/ Alice Munro / More Murder/ Fashion Photography and New Category: Sports for Art Hoes
Happy Sunday My Croissants!
Since I still operate on my childhood school schedule mentally, I think of the 4th of July as the mid-point of summer… which means, we are halfway done with this horrific season! (Don’t @ me unless you live in the South! December summer is far more enjoyable than July summer in TN, trust me!)
Anyway, I’m back at it with some more Art Hoe gems for this month:
First up, a movie that I adored, sent to me by one of my fav. musicians
(check out his beautiful Substack if you haven’t!)“Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot” is a 2018 movie based on the memoir of cartoonist John Callahan , who became a quadriplegic at the age of 21 after a car accident.
Here’s the cartoon from which the title is drawn:
Although many of Callahan’s cartoons deal with disability, the movie was centered around his journey from alcohol addiction to sobriety, and the various people who helped him get there. It is incredibly beautiful and well done.
Book: Alice Munro: The Progress of Love
(Don’t read that story synopsis on the link page, it doesn’t do the vibe justice at all.)
This is a book and also a short story, published in The New Yorker in 1985. I was having some west-to-east coast jet lag early last week when I landed in Columbus, Ohio from tour in Boise, ID. I was visiting my folks for a few days, and around 2 AM I went to their bookshelf and found this book of Alice Munro short stories. The first one was the title track (if books have such a thing) and man, it’s a doozey. Mundane and yet enthralling in the way only family situations can be? Needless to say I have stolen this book and it has come home with me to Nashville.
Art Hoes! Get thee Britbox if you do not yet have it… best $ you’ll ever spend.
Heads up if you need a new British murder mystery, this one ranks among the top that I’ve seen. Especially interesting because it involves specifically the unpacking of murders that happened decades ago.. hence the name of the series. Bonus if you recognize this actress from another beloved British mystery series!
Sports for Art Hoes: (trying a couple of new categories this month! LMK if you have any feedback)
Loyal croissant readers will remember that a couple weeks back, I was exploring my relationship with sports. Well, I have continued to feel positive towards MLS! I got to watch Nashville v Columbus live this week, and I enjoyed it. I think God knew there was an art hoe watching because we had a beautiful rainbow over the field just as the game kicked off, after a very long rain delay.
God: “Let’s make sure the aesthetic is good for today’s audience… lots of men in yellow, yelling in these stands…. let’s do some calm rainbow action in the blue sky to balance it out….”
General Art Hoe Activity: This month I went to see the Lee Alexander McQueen/Ann Ray Exhibit at the Frist Art Museum in Nashville.
Ann Ray was a beloved friend of McQueen, and photographed him in many of his softer moments. The exhibit was a combination of fabulous McQueen designs on display, and photographs of the designer and the shows in process.
Would wear… 10/10
Ok, that was a long one, thanks for making it this far!
No new music recs this month, as I have been in a mixing/mastering/tracking rabbit hole with my own projects and thus have only been listening to my own s$it over and over in various headphones and car speakers (how embarrassing!)
Oooo but that’s not true because there are a couple of amazing songs out from the upcoming Liv Greene and Leif Vollebekk records and you should def check them out!!!
And on that note, until next Sunday,
-Rachel
